Secure Mail
As part of the University of Colorado Denver's Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance initiatives, an email encryption system is available to UCDenver employees that allows secure communication via email with outside parties including patients, subjects research associates, partners, vendors, and other healthcare professionals.
Email communications containing protected health information with individuals outside our affiliate network must be secured. Our affiliate network includes University Hospital (UCH), University Physicians (UPI), The Childrens Hospital (TCH), Denver Health and National Jewish Hospital (NJH). Email communication to patients and/or subjects that includes PHI must also be secured even if the patient/subjects has indicated that it is acceptable to email in an insecure manner. The UCDenver secure email system is a HIPAA compliant method for handling these communications.

For policies related to the handling of protected health information at health care organizations other than UCD or UCH, please refer to the HIPAA policies of those organizations. UCD HIPAA policies pertain to activities related to UCD business only.
Please refer to the documentation links below for instructions on how to use this system. You will use the internal documentation if you are an employee of UCDenver, and the external documentation should be distributed to any recipients that you are sending mail to.
