Facilities Management Fire & Life Safety

The Fire & Life Safety section is charged with Fire and Life Safety Code enforcement, as well as auditing the compliance of campus fire and life safety systems.  This section also teaches campus fire safety and provides guidance to personnel and departments regarding fire prevention methods.

Authority having Jurisdiction:

The University of Colorado is a constitutionally created state body-corporate, which is governed by the Board of Regents. Pursuant to this, the University of Colorado Denver has chosen to become our own Authority having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for fire prevention and life safety concerns on the Anschutz Medical Campus and Denver campuses. Dr. James Shore, our previous Chancellor, signed the initial acceptance of the AHJ on June 24, 2002 and it was re-authorized by the current Chancellor, Dr. M. Roy Wilson, on July 6, 2006. Provisions of the AHJ are found in the campus policies section, and the Fire and Life Safety Policies link (to the right).

Policies, Procedures, and Fire Alarm Reports

In addition to Fire Code requirements, the university has a number of policies that have been promulgated internally—which are applicable to all personnel on the campuses.  Our section also publishes monthly fire alarm reports for all buildings owned and operated by the University of Colorado Denver.  (Click on the links to the right to view.)

Fire Safety & Extinguisher Class

An online fire safety course has been developed, and it is available 24/7.   This course covers material concerning fire hazards and fire mitigation on campus, as well as proper decision-making in the event of a fire.  The course is available only to university employees, on campus, using their campus logon credentials.  (Click on the link to begin the course.)

Note: Due to lack of adequate space on campus, the optional "hands on" live fire training session is not currently available.

Should an individual group or department wish to have a presentation that covers specifics of a building or particular fire safety concerns, the campus Fire & Life Safety Officer remains available to provide training at any location.

Contact the Fire & Life Safety Officer for inspections, classes, or fire safety information.
